I really do love Hiking

It’s only been in recent years that I have taken up the hobby of hiking and I am now a keen participant. I always loved bushwalking but really put hiking into a whole new category…but to be honest, they are rather similar… hiking just takes longer.

I’ve been fortunate to trek in two of the most beautiful and famous routes in the world, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley in Peru as well as Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. I would really like to take up more hikinh in Australia and my more local surrounds-  and with all the equipment now in my position, this is certainly possible.

The gear and equipment is one of the biggest hurdles to starting trekking and hiking, so my advice is slow and steady wins the race. Buy your boots first and well and truly break them in before attempting an overnight hike. You will then need appropriate clothing, backpack and supplioes such as emergency and first aid kits, snacks, water bladders and more. For overnight you will need sleeping bags, large backpacks, sleeping mats and walking poles. Buy these things gradually as you progress with your trips and walking – buying it in one hit will hurt your pocket big time!

Whether it’s a local mountain or the famous Andes of South America, I love walking and seeing things that you can only experience by foot.

Keep walking!

Video memories of Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro

Beautiful Bracelets from Miss Mia Jewellery

On Sunday 27th July, my friend Steph and I hosted the Climb 2 Harry Potter Movie Event. This was a fundraiser for our upcoming Mt Kilmanjaro Climb 2 Remember for Charity. The event was a great success and we would like to thank one of our great sponsors and supporters, Miss Mia Jewellery.

Karen from Miss Mia Jewellery donated 50 of her beautiful bracelets to our goodie bags to be given to all of our guests. The bracelets were a lovely way to say thank you to all of our supporters who came to the event.

The bracelets are hand made using beautiful beads of crystal, natural gems andsemi precious stones. Each of our bracelets came with a lovely charm inclusing elephants and hearts.

I will be taking on my biggest Adventure yet, Climbing Kilimanjaro for Alzheimer’s Australia NSW!  I will Climb Kilimanjaro in honour of my Grandpa who passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2008. I was in Africa when I found out and I said at the time I would one day do this for him, in his memory! We are raising money for Alzheimer’s Australia NSW to raise awareness and the necessary funds for prevention of the disease that affects so many. Dementia is the third leading cause of death in Australia, after heart disease and stroke. We must prevent and find a cure as it’s not a normal part of aging, and does affect 100,000’s of Australians.

KILI COUNTDOWN – 26 Days to go

Birthday/ Farewell/ Fundraiser Party SUCCESS

Last night I had my elaborately named birthday/farewell/fundraiser party! And it went swimmingly!

I cannot thank the people who attended enough! Their love and support really showed through and I just could not stop smiling.

I raised a couple of hundred dollars extra for my cause, but most importantly, I raised awareness for the Climb2Remember and the wonderful charity I’m doing it for, Alzheimer’s Australia NSW.

The party wasn’t all about the fundraiser – it was also a celebration of my birthday (which is next week August 20th) and also my leaving Sydney for my new home town, Melbourne. This was to be the last weekend for perhaps 2 months that I’d be up in Sydney so I wanted to make the most of it and why not kill 3 birds with 1 stone and have a MULTI theme/ reason party.

I loved catching up with my friends and family in the gorgeous Club Bar of the CBD Hotel. The venue was fab and I was really impressed with the staff, the food and the room itself. A pool table, bright red walls with stylish map shdes and a very shabby chic antiquey feel to it. Definitely somewhere I would book again and a lovely place to spend time with friends.

For more on Club Bar

So my fundraising page is now at $3500 – only $25 from my minimum fundraising target set by Alzheimer’s Australia NSW for the climb. I’m so pleased and just can’t wait to see the total keep going up and up as the time approaches.

I love to Party and I think having a celebration such as the one last night was a great way to say Happy Birthday, All the best for the move and Good luck for the big adventure! So thanks to those who said it!!

KILI COUNTDOWN – 32 Days to go

Training for Kilimanjaro

It’s crunch time! I leave in 3 months to take on my biggest adventure yet!!

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa with Alzheimer’s Australia NSW.

I’ll be doing this with about 10 people and we will hopefully all get to the summit.

My friend Steph has just joined me which is super exciting and a great Motivator! So we have started Training together.

Starting with 1 hour walks once a week, as well as pilates once a week (for breathing) and then our own independant strength trainings. We will soon be moving it up to 2 hour walks once a week, then twice a week then we will take on some MASSIVE 8 hour walks before we head off.

On Saturday last week, we went off from Richmond and walked round the Yarra and up through to the convent and Farmers market. Great views! But nothing compared to Kili!!! It’s getting exciting….

So stay tuned for our travel updates and photos of us in our hiking gear and on our walk-a-thons haha!

Memory Walk 2011

Memory Walk is the annual event for Alzheimer’s Australia NSW- and what a fantastic day it was.

I flew up from Melbourne just to be a part of this day and was so honoured to be a part of the team. There was so much love, support and friendliness between all participants.

There were 1000’s of entrants, 1000’s of $ raised and so much fun had.

We had P J Lane as the MC getting the crows ready and charming everyone as he always does. Jumping castles and face painting for the kids. There was loads of yummy food including the Sausage sizzle provided by the lovely people at the Rotary Club. And I had the fun job of being on the merchandise with the gorgeous Christine from the fundraising office at Alzheimer’s Australia NSW. We had pins, elephant squishy toys, Memory Walk shirts and Caps. They sold like hot cakes – and I was there promoting the Climb2Remember which I will do in September.

I always for get how emotional I get at these days  – I sat down to write the leaf below to go on the memory tree and I cried the whole time. I am so passionate and dedicated to this charity on behalf of my Grandpa. Grandpa Jack passed away in 2008 from Alzheimer’s. He was a delight and a pleasure and it was so sad that this disease took that. Luckily his resilient personality and loving never died and he was wthe warm and happy Grandpa I always knew. I miss him everyday.

This is a beautiful way to collect donations and allow people to express their wishes to their loved ones.

I am so glad I went for this event and got to be part of the day. We were also blessed with wonderful weather.
