My inspiring quote for my Everest Adventure

“It’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves” – Sir Edmund Hillary.

I have loved this quote for a long time but now it seems even more apt. I will be climbing to Everest Base Camp in March 2015. These words fill with me courage and determination. It truly is so much about mind over matter. We need a strong body, but if our mind is not on board, we simply cannot make it. Reaching the summit of a mountain is an incredible physical feat but the emotional and personal achievement will carry on long after that moment.

ConquerMountain

My mother bought this shirt for me as she just said it was so me and the way I am living my life. Especially after having climbed a mountain in 2011, Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. I also love rainbows and I love skiing and snowboarding so it makes even more sense! I wear this shirt with pride and always think of my training ambitions and my mum when I wear it.

it's not the mountain tshirt

These words will power me on in those times where I feel weary, my muscles are aching and my emotions are setting in. This great man was first to reach the height of Everest with his dear companion, Tenzing Norgay, and I cannot wait to follow in his footsteps.

Toronto Training walk for #everestbasecamptrek2015

Toronto is a big city and I found it to be a bit cold and uninviting at first. I was dubious of finding a good route to do my walk. I resigned myself to doing a city walk and just checking out the city streets. Luckily the staff at the hostel I was staying at were most helpful and directed me to a nearby park where people like to exercise.

I walked through a popular shopping area and checked out the Graffiti as I went.

Arriving at Trinity Bellwoods Park, I was pleasantly surprised to find a big area to walk and explore.

IMG_3736

Found some sets of steps and hills to do some running training and get some of the larger leg muscles working. There will be a lot of uphill on Everest! So when an area is flat, I found steps or small hills where I can and repeat.

IMG_3735

Lovely puppies and pets playing with their owners- a joy to see.

IMG_3740

Spotted some squirrels in the park. Always a pleasure to see these fluffy little critters. We don’t have them in Oz, so yes, Australians get overly excited at squirrel sightings!

IMG_3733

So it was actually a lovely walk and I got an hour and a half in before I headed to a work conference for 4 days – where there wasn’t much time for exercise! Apart from dancing to the amazing bands at Canadian Music Week.

Goal achieved. Training walk complete in Toronto!

London Training walk for #everestbasecamptrek2015

One of the most incredible things about my training walks is getting to explore cities I already thought I knew. I have set this goal for myself of going on a training walk in each city I visit so I take the time wherever I can to do it. In a lovely turn of events, I happened to be at my cousins house right next to Hampstead Heath for my training walk in London.

I lived in London for one year when I was 18 and I never made it to this incredible park as I spent more time in the South where I lived. I’m now kicking myself and will certainly be making more visits here. What an incredible escape in the middle of a busy metropolis. So picturesque, so English and so perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

A few photos from the walk:

Grand homes and houses provided entertainment as I could learn about the history of the area as I walked.

Beautiful ponds and lakes were scattered all around.

Friends and families meeting together on this glorious Spring day and enjoying the time together.

So many dogs lapping up the sun and frolicking in the long grass.

Ducklings swimming with their Mumma duck and bringing joy to all who saw them.

I always make a collage of my training walks and this was the hardest to put together! So many amazing shots!

Bahamas training walk for #everestbasecamptrek2015

It’s a tough day when you have to roll out of bed to brilliant sunshine, sparkling blue waters and you have to do a training walk in a tropical paradise…. NOT! Has to be one of my fave training walks so far.

IMG_8946

Headphones in, shoes on and no wallet or bag, just my iphone and some wicked tunes. I jived along down the street and spent my whole walk waving to locals and saying “HELLO”. It’s such a delight to see the island life and the closeness of the people here. It’s a real community and it was so great to be amongst it.

IMG_8890

It’s only a tiny island so it wasn’t long before I was at this beautiful lookout to the heads and the edge of the South Island.

Walked along past some glorious blue waters.

IMG_8964

And some more blue waters.

IMG_8987

And enjoyed the bright and beautiful colours of the village where we were staying.

IMG_8975

Ended the walk with a peaceful swing in the hammock – reflecting upon the quote that reads on my shirt “ It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves” – Sir Edmund Hillary.

IMG_8996

Tropical training is definitely not going to prepare me for Everest – apart from the endurance and the excessive sweating – but I think it’s training I’d like to continue!
