AFL Legends Support Outreach Hospital, Victoria

Omeo, Victoria: Celebrity Charity Football match, The Peter Canning Cup, will be played on Friday 27th July 2012 at 7pm under lights at the Omeo Football Ground. Past greats of AFL Robert Flower, Wayne Walsh, Stephen Powell and Guy Rigoni will be coaching the young guns in the big match. This now annual event will raise much-needed funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and the assistance of patients at the Omeo Hospital.

The Peter Canning Cup is in honour of Peter Canning, a legend of Dinner Plain and the snow area surrounds. Peter’s good heart and fun spirit have not been shadowed by the Motor Neurone Disease he now lives with day to day. Young guns at heart… with a lot of heart will be out there playing for Peter to raise as much money as possible to change the future of this disease.

Many fundraising activities will take place on the night including raffles, auctions, donations and challenges to raise as much money as possible for Outreach Victoria, Omeo Hospital. For the first time we’ll also be having the ladies do their part, in playing a competitive charity netball match prior to the football game.

Peter McKenna of the Dinner Plain Advisory Committee and Dinner Plain Residence and Business Operators Society says: “This event is for our legend and hero of Dinner Plain, Peter Canning.” McKenna and a team of passionate young people have organised this event for two years consecutively. They hope to see it become one of the regular calendar events of the season at Dinner Plain/ Mt Hotham.

The rivalry of these two sides, Dinner Plain/Hotham Football Club vs. Omeo- Benambra, has been brewing for a year now since Omeo took out the cup last year. Celebrity coaches Robert Flower, Wayne Walsh, Stephen Powell and Guy Rigoni will be on hand to teach these young guns a thing or two.  Big thanks also to our sponsors Boags and Patties Pies, who will keep the guys and the supporters in good spirits for the match.

This event is for a cause that means so much to the people of Omeo, Swifts Creek, Dinner Plain, Hotham and the Alpine Region. We are raising as much as possible to support the Omeo Hospital, the Outreach Victoria program and Motor Neurone Disease. True to the AFL Grand Finals tradition, the National Anthem will be sung by well known Australian singer, Kathy Ansty. Any coverage and promotion of the event would be greatly appreciated and we can provide a live cross via satellite.
